Thrush in Babies

Thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth. It causes white or creamy patches on the tongue, gums, cheeks or roof of the mouth that do not wipe away easily.

Candida yeast causes thrush. The yeast normally lives in the mouth but can overgrow after antibiotics, when the immune system is immature or under other conditions that change the normal balance of microbes.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • You think your baby has thrush.
  • Feeding becomes painful or your baby drinks less.
  • A diaper rash develops at the same time.
  • Symptoms continue or return after treatment.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your baby is unable to feed, becomes severely dehydrated or has another life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
