Earwax Buildup

Earwax is a natural substance made by glands in the ear canal. A buildup happens when wax collects faster than it can move out of the ear.

Narrow ear canals, heavy wax production, hearing aids or earbuds can contribute. Cotton swabs and other objects can push wax deeper and create a blockage.

It is the American Academy of Pediatrics’ own tool and it loads from their site, so a lost connection or a content blocker leaves this space empty. Open it on HealthyChildren.org with the button below, or call your office and a nurse will answer.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • Your child has hearing changes, ear pain or drainage.
  • Wax appears deeply impacted and does not improve with safe softening methods.
  • You suspect an eardrum injury or foreign object.
  • You are unsure whether wax is causing the symptoms.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child has any life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
