Sinus Pain and Congestion

Sinus congestion happens when the lining of the nose and sinuses becomes swollen and mucus does not drain normally. It can cause pressure, stuffiness, facial discomfort and nasal drainage.

Viral colds and allergies are common causes. Bacterial sinus infection, irritants and structural problems in the nose can also cause persistent congestion or sinus pain.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • Symptoms are not improving after the expected course of a cold.
  • Your child improves and then becomes clearly worse again.
  • Facial pain or fever is significant.
  • Swelling develops around the eye.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child has severe swelling around the eye with vision changes.
  • Your child develops a severe headache with confusion, weakness or another neurologic symptom.
  • You think your child has a life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
