Nose Injuries in Children

A nose injury is damage to the bones, cartilage or soft tissues of the nose. It can cause pain, swelling, bruising, bleeding or a change in shape.

Falls, sports, collisions and direct blows are common causes. More serious facial or head injuries can also damage the nose and nearby structures.

It is the American Academy of Pediatrics’ own tool and it loads from their site, so a lost connection or a content blocker leaves this space empty. Open it on HealthyChildren.org with the button below, or call your office and a nurse will answer.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • The nose remains clearly crooked after swelling begins to improve.
  • Your child cannot breathe normally through the nose.
  • Bleeding keeps returning or will not stop.
  • Pain or swelling is severe or you notice a large swelling inside the nostril.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • A severe facial or head injury caused the nose injury.
  • Bleeding is heavy and cannot be controlled.
  • Clear fluid drains from the nose after major head trauma or another life-threatening symptom develops.

When can my child be seen

Be seen today.

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
