Cough in Babies Under 12 Months

A cough in a baby is a reflex that helps clear mucus or irritation from the airways. Coughs may sound dry, wet, harsh or barking depending on the cause.

Colds and other viral respiratory infections are common causes. RSV, croup, bronchiolitis, reflux, pneumonia and other breathing problems can also cause coughing.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • Breathing becomes faster or harder than usual.
  • Your baby wheezes or makes a harsh sound when breathing in.
  • Your baby drinks less or has fewer wet diapers.
  • A very young baby develops fever.
  • The cough is worsening or not improving as expected.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your baby has severe trouble breathing or stops breathing.
  • Your baby’s lips or face turn blue or gray.
  • Your baby is very difficult to wake or has another life-threatening symptom.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
