A Missed or Late Period

A missed or late period means menstrual bleeding does not start when expected. Periods can be irregular for several years after menstruation begins.

Pregnancy, stress, illness, weight changes, intense exercise, hormonal conditions and some medicines can delay or stop periods.

It is the American Academy of Pediatrics’ own tool and it loads from their site, so a lost connection or a content blocker leaves this space empty. Open it on HealthyChildren.org with the button below, or call your office and a nurse will answer.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • Periods are repeatedly missed or remain very irregular.
  • Pregnancy is possible.
  • There has been significant weight loss, intense exercise or another major health change.
  • Your teen has other symptoms that concern you.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • A missed period comes with severe abdominal pain, fainting or very heavy bleeding.
  • You think there is a life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
