Breast Symptoms in Children and Teens

Breast symptoms in children and teens include pain, tenderness, swelling, lumps, nipple changes or differences in breast development.

Normal puberty commonly causes tenderness, uneven growth and temporary breast tissue in boys. Cysts, infection, injury and other breast conditions can also cause symptoms.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • A lump keeps growing or does not seem related to normal breast development.
  • The breast becomes very red, painful or swollen.
  • Drainage comes from the nipple.
  • Your child develops fever or significant skin changes.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child appears severely ill with rapidly spreading breast infection.
  • Your child has any life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
