Hay Fever in Children

Hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction that affects the nose and sometimes the eyes. It commonly causes sneezing, a runny or stuffy nose and itching.

Pollen, dust mites, mold, pet dander and other airborne allergens can trigger hay fever. The specific triggers vary from child to child and may be seasonal or present year-round.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • Allergy symptoms interfere with sleep, school or normal activity.
  • Your child’s usual allergy treatment is not controlling symptoms.
  • You are unsure whether symptoms come from allergies or infection.
  • Asthma or other breathing symptoms occur with the allergies.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child has severe breathing trouble or a severe allergic reaction.
  • Your child has any life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
