Flu in Children

Influenza, or flu, is a contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It can cause fever, chills, body aches, headache, fatigue, cough and other respiratory symptoms.

Influenza A and influenza B viruses cause most seasonal flu. Other respiratory viruses can produce similar symptoms, so symptoms alone do not always identify influenza.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • You think your child has flu and they are very young or have a condition that raises their risk of complications.
  • Your child is not drinking well or shows signs of dehydration.
  • Fever or cough improves and then returns or becomes worse.
  • Your child develops breathing trouble, chest pain or severe weakness.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child has severe trouble breathing or ribs pulling in with each breath.
  • Your child’s lips or face turn blue or gray.
  • Your child is not alert, cannot be woken normally or has a seizure.
  • You think your child has a life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
