Sore Throat in Children

A sore throat is pain, scratchiness or irritation in the throat. Swallowing often makes the discomfort more noticeable.

Viruses cause most sore throats in children. Strep throat and other bacterial infections can also cause throat pain. Allergies, postnasal drainage, dry air, mouth breathing, reflux and other types of irritation are additional causes.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • The sore throat is severe, is not improving or lasts longer than expected.
  • Your child has fever, a rash, swollen neck glands or other symptoms that make you concerned about strep.
  • Your child is drinking much less than usual or shows signs of dehydration.
  • Your child has significant trouble opening the mouth or swallowing.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child has severe trouble breathing.
  • Your child cannot swallow fluids.
  • Your child develops new drooling because they cannot swallow normally.
  • You think your child has a life-threatening emergency.
