Urinary Tract Infections in Children

A urinary tract infection, or UTI, is an infection in the bladder, kidneys or another part of the urinary tract. It can cause pain with urination, frequent urination, accidents, abdominal pain or fever.

Bacteria cause most UTIs. Bacteria from the skin or stool can enter the urinary tract and multiply. Structural urinary problems can make infections more likely in some children.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • Your child has pain or burning with urination.
  • Your child urinates much more often or develops new accidents.
  • Fever occurs without a clear cause, especially in a younger child.
  • Your child has back or side pain, vomiting or appears ill.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child appears severely ill, cannot keep fluids down or has severe dehydration.
  • You think your child has a life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
