Scabies in Children

Scabies is a contagious skin infestation caused by tiny mites that burrow into the outer layer of skin. It usually causes intense itching and a bumpy rash, often worse at night.

The human itch mite causes scabies. It spreads mainly through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and can also spread through shared clothing, bedding or towels in some situations.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • You think your child has scabies.
  • Other household members have similar nighttime itching.
  • Scratching has caused open sores, increasing redness or signs of infection.
  • Symptoms continue after treatment or the household is having trouble clearing the infestation.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child has a severe allergic reaction, severe illness or another life-threatening emergency.
