Ringworm in Children

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin, scalp or nails. On the skin it often creates a round or ring-shaped scaly rash, while scalp infection can cause scaling and hair loss.

Several types of dermatophyte fungi cause ringworm. The fungi spread through contact with infected people, animals, soil or contaminated objects.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • The rash involves the scalp or causes hair loss.
  • The rash keeps spreading or does not improve with appropriate treatment.
  • The area becomes very swollen, painful or infected-looking.
  • You are unsure whether the rash is ringworm.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child has any life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen
