Newborn Reflexes and Behavior

Newborn reflexes are automatic movements and responses present early in life. Startling, rooting, sucking, grasping and brief jerky movements can all be part of normal newborn behavior.

These reflexes come from the developing brain and nervous system. Illness, prematurity, neurologic problems and other medical conditions can change a baby’s movement, muscle tone or responsiveness.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • Your baby seems unusually limp or moves one side less than the other.
  • Repeated unusual jerking or movements keep occurring.
  • Your baby feeds poorly or becomes difficult to wake.
  • You notice a sudden change from your baby’s normal behavior.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your baby has a seizure.
  • Your baby has severe breathing trouble or cannot be woken normally.
  • You think your baby has a life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen

Be seen today.

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
