A Red Eye Without Discharge

A red eye without discharge means the white part of the eye looks pink or red without obvious pus. The eye may also itch, water, burn or feel irritated.

Viruses, allergies, dryness, smoke, chemicals and minor irritation are common causes. Foreign objects, scratches and other eye problems can also cause redness.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • Your child has true eye pain rather than mild irritation.
  • Light hurts the eye or vision changes.
  • The eyelid becomes significantly swollen.
  • The redness followed an injury or is not improving.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child suddenly loses vision or has severe eye pain.
  • A chemical or penetrating injury affected the eye.
  • You think your child has a serious eye emergency.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
