Depression in Children and Teens

Depression is a mental-health condition that causes persistent changes in mood, interest, energy and daily functioning. Children may appear sad, irritable, withdrawn or less interested in activities they usually enjoy.

Biology, family history, stress, trauma, chronic illness and social or environmental factors can all contribute to depression. Often there is no single cause.

It is the American Academy of Pediatrics’ own tool and it loads from their site, so a lost connection or a content blocker leaves this space empty. Open it on HealthyChildren.org with the button below, or call your office and a nurse will answer.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • Sadness, irritability or withdrawal persists for weeks.
  • Sleep, appetite, school performance or relationships change significantly.
  • Your child loses interest in activities they usually enjoy.
  • Your child talks about self-harm, hopelessness or not wanting to be alive.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child has an active suicide plan, has made an attempt or cannot be kept safe.
  • Call or text 988 for immediate suicide and crisis support.
  • Your child has an immediate life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
