Behavior Concerns in Children

Behavior concerns are repeated actions or reactions that interfere with safety, learning, relationships or family life. Examples can include aggression, frequent tantrums, defiance, impulsivity or withdrawal.

Development, temperament, stress, sleep, learning problems, attention disorders, anxiety, trauma and family or school circumstances can all influence behavior.

It is the American Academy of Pediatrics’ own tool and it loads from their site, so a lost connection or a content blocker leaves this space empty. Open it on HealthyChildren.org with the button below, or call your office and a nurse will answer.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • Behavior creates safety problems at home, school or childcare.
  • Behavior causes major problems with learning, friendships or family life.
  • Your child has a sudden major change in personality or behavior.
  • You have concerns about development, attention, anxiety or another underlying issue.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your child is dangerously aggressive or cannot be safely controlled.
  • Your child has suicidal behavior, severe self-harm or an immediate risk of harming someone else.
  • Your child or someone else faces an immediate life-threatening danger.

When can my child be seen

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
