Bottle Feeding and Formula

Bottle feeding means giving a baby formula, expressed breast milk or another medically appropriate feeding through a bottle. Formula must be mixed according to its instructions so the concentration is correct.

Feeding problems can come from nipple flow, feeding position, reflux, swallowing difficulty, formula intolerance, illness and other medical or developmental issues.

It is the American Academy of Pediatrics’ own tool and it loads from their site, so a lost connection or a content blocker leaves this space empty. Open it on HealthyChildren.org with the button below, or call your office and a nurse will answer.

When to see a doctor

Contact your pediatrician or another healthcare professional if:

  • Your baby feeds poorly or has very few wet diapers.
  • Your baby has repeated forceful vomiting or is not gaining weight.
  • Blood in the stool, hives, swelling or other possible allergy symptoms develop.
  • Formula may have been mixed incorrectly or you have questions about preparation.

Call 911 or get emergency care if:

  • Your baby has severe trouble breathing or another severe allergic reaction.
  • Your baby has severe dehydration or is very difficult to wake.
  • You think your baby has a life-threatening emergency.

When can my child be seen

Be seen today.

Every office keeps same-day appointments for illness and injury.

This evening or at the weekend.

Most offices run After Hours Care, by appointment rather than walk-in.

If you are worried, call. We would rather answer a question that turns out to be nothing.
